The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) is the central authority under the Ministry of Railways, Government of India, responsible for the transparent and merit-based selection of personnel for various technical and non-technical cadres. For the 2026 cycle, RRB has announced one of India’s largest employment drives under Centralized Employment Notice (CEN) 09/2025, aimed at filling 22,195 vacancies in Level-1 (Group D) positions. These roles are the backbone of the Indian Railways, ensuring the safety, maintenance, and operational efficiency of the world’s fourth-largest railway network. **Job Profile and Responsibilities:** The job profile for Group D personnel is varied and categorized across several departments including Engineering, Mechanical, Electrical, Signal & Telecommunication, and Medical. Key roles include: * **Track Maintainer Grade-IV:** Responsible for the upkeep and safety of railway tracks, identifying breakdowns, and ensuring smooth train movement. * **Pointsman:** Operates railway switches and signals to direct trains to the correct tracks, a role critical for preventing accidents. * **Assistant Workshop/Loco Shed:** Involved in the overhauling, maintenance, and repair of diesel/electric locomotives and passenger coaches. * **Signal & Telecom Assistant:** Assists in the installation and troubleshooting of signaling devices and communication equipment. * **Hospital Assistant:** Supports medical staff in railway hospitals, ensuring patient care and cleanliness of medical facilities. **Salary and Growth:** Candidates selected for Level-1 posts receive a starting basic pay of ₹18,000 as per the 7th CPC Pay Matrix. Total monthly emoluments, including Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), and Transport Allowance, typically range between ₹22,500 and ₹25,500. Indian Railways offers excellent career progression through departmental examinations (LDCE/GDCE), allowing Group D employees to move up to Group C positions like Senior Clerk, Station Master, or Junior Engineer over time.
